Prof. Antonin Chapoy is a Professorial Research Fellow at Heriot-Watt University, affiliated with the School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society and the Institute for GeoEnergy Engineering. His research focuses on gas hydrates, flow assurance, and phase equilibria in energy systems. He holds a PhD in Chemical Engineering from Paris School of Mines and has over 15 years of industry-sponsored research experience.
Education:
- DEA (MSc) in Chemical Engineering (Université d'Aix-Marseille, 2001)
- MSc in Energy Engineering (Institut Universitaire des Systémes Thermiques et Industriels, 2001)
- PhD in Chemical Engineering (Paris School of Mines, 2004)
Research Interests:
- Experimental and thermodynamic modeling of fluid phase equilibria
- Gas hydrate formation, prevention, and applications
- Hydrate inhibitor design and flow assurance
- CO₂ phase behavior and carbon capture/storage
- Thermophysical properties of gas mixtures
Recent Research Trends: His 2024–2025 articles emphasize CO₂-rich systems, hydrate dissociation, and impurity effects in energy systems. Key areas include CO₂-H₂S storage, hydrogen-CO₂ blends, and phase behavior modeling.
Advising & Grants: Supervises PhD students and leads industry projects like the Joint Industrial Project (JIP) on gas hydrates and flow assurance. Manages equipment such as high-pressure viscometers and calorimeters at the Institute for GeoEnergy Engineering.
Labs & Teams: Leads the Hydrates, Flow Assurance & Phase Equilibria group and collaborates with global institutions on UN SDGs related to clean energy and climate action.
