Anton Vrieling is an Associate Professor at the University of Twente, holding dual affiliations in the Department of Natural Resources and the Digital Society Institute within the Faculty of Geo-information Science and Earth Observation. His research focuses on applying satellite image time series to monitor dynamic natural resources, particularly agricultural and natural vegetation cover changes. He specializes in vegetation phenology, drought monitoring, and the use of advanced satellite sensors like Sentinel-2 for fine-scale environmental analysis. Before joining the University of Twente in 2009, he earned MSc degrees in Tropical Land Use and Geo-information Science (2001) and a PhD in soil erosion studies (2007) from Wageningen University, followed by postdoctoral work at the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (2007–2009).
Research interests include climate change impacts on ecosystems, livestock-environment interactions in rangelands, and the development of index-based insurance tools using satellite data. Notable projects include the NL-CGIAR Senior Expert Programme (2019–2029), addressing climate resilience in Kenyan pastoral systems through Earth observation technologies.
His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to climate action (SDG 13) and responsible consumption (SDG 12). Key achievements include pioneering methods for vegetation seasonality analysis and drought risk assessment. Awards include the Remote Sensing Letters Award (2018) and a Research Award for Best Scientific Paper (2015).
Current projects focus on integrating satellite-derived insights into financial risk assessment (ESG frameworks), improving rangeland monitoring through LoRaWAN sensors, and evaluating ecological restoration efforts using long-term satellite datasets. His research bridges academic innovation with practical applications in sustainable resource management.
