Anthony Metcalfe is a Professor of Wound Healing at the University of Birmingham's School of Chemical Engineering and a member of the Healthcare Technologies Institute (HTI). He specializes in scar-free healing, regenerative medicine, and biomaterials for wound repair. His research spans over 60 peer-reviewed publications and major grants from the MRC, Wellcome Trust, and Wolfson Foundation. Metcalfe holds a BSc in Biochemistry and a PhD in Molecular Genetics from the University of Lancaster. He has held academic and industry roles at institutions including the University of Manchester, Brighton Centre for Regenerative Medicine, and F-star Biotechnology.
Research interests include scar reduction technologies, burn wound healing, and programmed cell death mechanisms. He has developed clinically tested therapies and holds patents for innovations in tendon repair and nerve function recovery. Metcalfe actively contributes to editorial boards (e.g., Frontiers in Surgery) and advisory roles for organizations like DEBRA International and GSK Fibrosis Discovery.
His work emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration, bridging chemical engineering, biomedical science, and clinical translation. Notable achievements include advancing keratinocyte delivery systems, biomaterials for skin regeneration, and anti-scarring therapies through Phase III clinical trials.
