Anthony Kovscek

Anthony Kovscek is the Keleen and Carlton Beal Professor of Petroleum Engineering at Stanford University and Senior Fellow at the Precourt Institute for Energy. His research focuses on geological carbon storage, hydrogen storage in subsurface formations, and enhanced oil recovery. He develops predictive models for fluid flow in porous media, emphasizing CO2 leakage mitigation and hydrogen storage optimization.

Current projects include assessing storage potential in California's depleted gas fields, optimizing injection well trajectories to minimize geomechanical risks, and evaluating AI-assisted workflows for carbon storage monitoring. He leads the Center for Mechanistic Control of Unconventional Formations (CMC-UF).

Recent work explores viscous-dominated flow in saline aquifers, fault-leakage dynamics in the San Joaquin Basin, and renewable energy curtailment solutions via underground storage. His group integrates experimental data with reservoir simulations to advance sustainable energy technologies.
