Anthony Gaughan is a Professor of Law and Kern Family Chair in Law at Drake University's Drake Law School. He holds a JD from Harvard Law School and a PhD in History from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His expertise spans Civil Procedure, Constitutional Law, Election Law, Evidence, and Legal/Constitutional History. Gaughan has served as a U.S. Navy officer, a litigator at a Wisconsin law firm, and a Senior Fellow at Ohio State University’s Election Law Program. He is a member of the American Law Institute and has been honored with multiple teaching awards, including the Leland Forrest Outstanding Professor of the Year (2015, 2016, 2021, 2025) and Stevens Faculty Scholar of the Year (2023).
His research focuses on election law, legal history, and constitutional dynamics. Notable works include analyses of redistricting, Supreme Court partisanship, and the historical foundations of American democracy. Selected publications include *Cyclical Misalignment* (2025), *The Unsettled State of Corporate General Personal Jurisdiction* (2024), and *Redistricting in the Political Thicket* (2023). His work often bridges historical and contemporary legal challenges, emphasizing the evolution of democratic institutions.
Gaughan’s professional contributions extend to public service, including his appointment to the Iowa Supreme Court’s Rules of Civil Procedure Review Task Force. His interdisciplinary approach is reflected in collaborations across law, history, and political science.
