Dr. Anthony Dyer Hoefer (Andy) is an Associate Professor of Literature at George Mason University specializing in U.S. southern studies, race, religion, and environmental justice. His monograph Apocalypse South: Judgment, Cataclysm, and Resistance in the Regional Imaginary (Ohio State University Press, 2012) examines representations of disaster and resistance in southern literature.
His research explores intersections of race, environment, and regional identity through literary analysis, cultural geography, and ecocritical frameworks. Recent publications analyze commemorative landscapes in South Carolina, ecological violence in southern fiction, and graphic narratives of Hurricane Katrina.
Dr. Hoefer's work frequently addresses environmental justice concerns through literary analysis, examining how narratives represent slow violence and ecological crises in marginalized communities. He also researches cultural memorialization practices and their relationship to racial histories.
Honors: George Mason University Teaching Excellence Award (2021).
Currently serves as Associate Dean for Student Engagement in Mason's Honors College, overseeing academic programs and student development initiatives.
