Dr. Anthony Chan serves as Professor in the Department of Accounting at Toronto Metropolitan University's Ted Rogers School of Management. A dual Fellow of the Chartered Professional Accountants of Ontario (FCPA) and Chartered Management Accountants (FCMA), he was honored with CPA Ontario's highest distinction in 2021 for lifetime professional contributions.
His educational foundation includes BBA, MBA, and PhD degrees, complemented by extensive professional qualifications. Professor Chan maintains active roles beyond academia including service on Ontario's Training Colleges and Universities Policy Advisory Council (2001-2003) and as SSHRC External Assessor for research grant evaluation (2007-2012, 2018).
Professor Chan's research centers on international accounting, accounting and culture, and accounting regulation, with distinctive focus on Chinese contexts through structuration theory frameworks. His work examines management control systems, regulatory adoption in transitional economies, and cultural influences on financial reporting practices across 14 publications spanning 35 years.
His publication trajectory shows evolution from theoretical foundations (1980s-90s) to culturally contextualized applications (2000s-present), with recent work analyzing management accounting system development and epistemological frameworks. Articles appear in journals including Accounting and Finance, Journal of Accounting Business and Management, and Journal of Modern Accounting and Auditing.
