Anthony A Mottola

Anthony A Mottola, Ph.D., serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Criminal Justice & Homeland Security at the School of Social Sciences, University of Tennessee Southern. He is a former sergeant detective with 25 years of service in the New York City Police Department (NYPD) and has additional security experience with the United States Air Force and the National Basketball Association (NBA).

His educational background includes:

• M.P.A. from Marist College
• Ph.D. from NOVA Southeastern University

Dr. Mottola's research focuses on human trafficking, labor trafficking, border operations, street gangs, transnational organized crime, sovereign citizens, and extremism. His expertise stems from extensive field operations including service as executive officer for the NYPD Intelligence Bureau’s Strategic Unit (a covert counterterrorism initiative), director of the Domestic Liaison Program, and first responder during the World Trade Center attacks recovery efforts. He represented the Intelligence Bureau in major investigations such as the Boston Bombing, civil unrest, and mass shootings.
