Dr. Ansgar Zoch is a Chancellor's Fellow and Group Leader at the Institute of Genetics and Cancer, University of Edinburgh. His research focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms that defend genome integrity in the germline, with particular emphasis on the piRNA pathway and its role in transposon silencing.
Dr. Zoch's research interests span several interconnected areas of molecular genetics and epigenetics. His primary focus is on piRNA-directed repression of transposons, which are mobile genetic elements that threaten genome stability. His lab investigates how the piRNA pathway identifies active transposon loci and initiates epigenetic silencing mechanisms, particularly through DNA methylation. This research has direct implications for understanding male infertility, as failures in transposon silencing lead to impaired spermatogenesis in both mice and humans. Using an interdisciplinary approach that bridges molecular interactions to in vivo mouse models, Dr. Zoch's work aims to decipher fundamental mechanisms of gene regulation and transposon-driven pathologies.
Analysis of Dr. Zoch's recent publications reveals a consistent focus on the piRNA pathway and its components. His research has made significant contributions to understanding how proteins like C19ORF84, TEX15, and SPOCD1 connect piRNA machinery with DNA methylation systems to defend the germline genome. The publications demonstrate a progression from basic mechanism discovery to clinical implications, particularly in understanding the genetic basis of human male infertility. His work increasingly integrates structural biology, epigenetics, and reproductive medicine to provide a comprehensive view of genome defense mechanisms.
Dr. Zoch currently leads an active research project titled "Understanding piRNA-guided transcriptional repression," funded by the Royal Society from October 2024 to September 2025. His laboratory employs advanced techniques including mouse genetics and transgenesis, immunoprecipitation-mass spectrometry (IP-MS), and whole genome DNA methylation analysis to investigate genome defense mechanisms.
The Zoch Research Group operates within the Institute of Genetics and Cancer at the University of Edinburgh, contributing to the institution's strong reputation in genetics and molecular biology research. The group collaborates extensively with other researchers both within the university and internationally, as evidenced by the multi-institutional nature of his publications.
