Annika Benz is a Lecturer at the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology at the University of Cologne. She is pursuing a PhD under Prof. Sandra Kurfürst, focusing on climate activism and collaborative ethnographic methods within the research training group 'connecting-excluding: Cultural dynamics beyond globalised networks.' Her work bridges academia and activism, emphasizing decolonial approaches and ethical research practices.
Her research spans political anthropology, globalization, and intergenerational dynamics, with regional expertise in Germany, East Asia (China, Taiwan, Hong Kong), and Southeast Asia (Philippines, Indonesia). She has conducted fieldwork in China, Taiwan, and the Philippines, exploring topics like Muslim tourism, youth activism, and higher education.
Benz holds an M.A. in Anthropology from the University of Cologne and has received scholarships from the German Academic Scholarship Foundation and the Gender Mentoring Agency. She teaches courses such as 'Decolonizing Anthropology' and 'Anthropology of Activism,' emphasizing critical pedagogy and applied research.
