Associate Professor Annika Antonsson is an Adjunct Associate Professor at the PA Southside Clinical Unit within the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Behavioural Sciences at the University of Queensland. Her research focuses on virology and epidemiology, particularly the role of human papillomavirus (HPV) in cancers such as oral and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinomas. She is also investigating HPV prevalence in the general population, its association with vaccination, and its impact on Indigenous health.
Her research interests include the Oral Diversity Study, HPV in head and neck cancers, and the development of the FAP primer for HPV detection. She has contributed to studies on the natural history of oral HPV infections, the role of microRNAs in cancer prognosis, and the microbiome in breast cancer tissue.
Dr. Antonsson has secured grants from institutions like Cancer Council Queensland and the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia. She is available for supervision and has advised doctoral and master’s students on topics like HPV-associated head and neck cancers and miRNA expression analysis. Her work emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration, including studies on Indigenous health disparities, sexual behavior impacts, and global HPV prevalence trends.
