Prof. Dr. Annie K. Powell is a Full Professor of Inorganic Chemistry at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), holding a chair at the Institute of Nanotechnology (INT) and the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry. She has been a leading figure in inorganic cluster chemistry since 1999, focusing on the synthesis and magnetic characterization of coordination clusters, 3d-4f systems, and multifunctional materials. Her research bridges molecular magnetism, biomimetics, and polyoxometalate (POM) hybrid systems, with over 500 peer-reviewed publications and 300 international presentations.
- Education: PhD in Chemistry (1985, Manchester University), B.Sc. (Hons) Chemistry (1981, Manchester University).
- Appointments: 1999–present: Full Professor at KIT; 1989–1999: Lecturer to Professor at University of East Anglia; 1986–1988: Postdoctoral Researcher at University of Freiburg.
Her research spans five core areas: (1) Molecular Magnets (e.g., Dy3 triangle as Single-Molecule Toroics archetype), (2) MOFs/SMOFs (e.g., Dy36 and Y79 cluster-based frameworks), (3) Biomimetics (e.g., Mn4Ca clusters mimicking Photosystem II), (4) Processing of Coordination Compounds (e.g., thermolysis of Fe19 clusters into nanostructured oxides), and (5) Multifunctional Materials (e.g., porous MOFs with magnetic ordering). She pioneered the synthesis of the largest spin molecular species (Fe19, S = 83/2) and discovered the first Single-Molecule Magnet (SMM) behavior in Fe4Dy2 clusters.
Her 15 most recent articles (2023–2025) explore 3d-4f butterfly clusters, 161Dy Mössbauer studies of toroidal moments, LnDOTA-based ligand engineering, and CO2-fixation into magnetocaloric Gd8 clusters. These works highlight her focus on spin-phonon coupling, magnetic anisotropy, and supramolecular design.
Scientific Honors include: Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry; Honorary Professor at University of Otago; Seaborg Lectureship (UC Berkeley); and multiple visiting fellowships (University of Melbourne, NIMS Japan). She served on the DFG Collaborative Research Centre '4f for Future' and the UK Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014) panel.
In advising, she mentored over 20 postdoctoral researchers and PhD students, including Dr. Yan Peng and Dr. Masooma Ibrahim. Her grants include DFG centers of excellence, EU RTN, and Helmholtz Society funding.
