Dr. Annick Dewald serves as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Engineering at Olin College of Engineering and is a founding faculty member at Greenway, a new engineering college in Vermont. She joined Olin in September 2025 to study its curriculum for Greenway's upcoming development.
Her academic journey includes:
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering from Smith College
- Professional experience at Boeing Research and Technologies in Saint Louis, supporting flight testing for electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft
- PhD in Aeronautics and Astronautics from MIT
Dr. Dewald's research specializes in solar-electric aircraft design and system-level optimization for Earth observation missions, particularly Antarctic ice shelf monitoring using Interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR). She pioneered 'objective space exploration'—a method generating design option sets to clarify stakeholder priorities when requirements are ambiguous. Her work addresses critical gaps in ice fracture mechanics observation by enabling meter-resolution data collection at hourly intervals.
As an educator committed to diversifying engineering, she teaches Mechanics of Solids and Structures and participates in Olin's Design Nature course. She actively mentors students from underrepresented backgrounds and redefines engineering identity to include systems thinkers and community-focused problem solvers.
Dr. Dewald collaborates with electra.aero and led undergraduate interns in 2022 to manufacture and flight-test the 90-foot wingspan Dawn unmanned aircraft system for Antarctic monitoring missions.
Her personal pursuits include:
- Outdoor activities: hiking, rollerblading, ice skating, cross-country skiing
- Fitness: weight lifting, rock climbing, line dancing
- Culinary interests: high-protein meal preparation
