Annick Cossic is a Professor of English Literature and Civilization at the University of Brest, France, affiliated with the research unit Heritage and Creation in Text and Image (HCTI, EA 4249). She directs the GIS Sociabilités network focused on eighteenth-century sociability and leads the Arts and Creation Department at the Maison des Sciences de l'Homme de Bretagne (MSHB).
Her academic credentials include an English Aggregation (1977), a Doctorate from the University of Paris III (1986) on Christopher Anstey's The New Bath Guide, and a Habilitation (HDR) from the University of Brest examining Bath's poetic representations versus historical reality.
Professor Cossic's research centers on eighteenth-century British cultural history, specializing in:
- Urban development in 18th-century Britain
- Spa towns as Enlightenment social laboratories
- Satirical poetry as social commentary
- Intersections of medical discourse and literary production
- Evolving models of sociability across British and French contexts
Her recent publications reveal a sustained analytical focus on Bath as a microcosm of sociability, examining how therapeutic practices, fashion, and literary representations coalesced to form distinctive British social models. She employs comparative frameworks across British and French sources to dissect how spa culture, satirical verse, and medical narratives shaped Enlightenment social dynamics.
As an academic leader, Cossic has directed major research initiatives including CEIMA (2008-2012) and the MSHB Sociability Project (2009-2012), organizing international conferences in Brest and Newcastle. She currently oversees the GIS Sociabilités network and edits the 'Transversales' book collection while serving on national examination juries for the English Aggregation.
Her scholarly work operates through the HCTI laboratory and GIS Sociabilités network, fostering transnational collaborations that examine eighteenth-century sociability through interdisciplinary lenses including literature, history, and cultural studies.
