She holds affiliations with CREGÉS (social gerontology), MÉOS (medication as a social object), IRSPUM, and international research groups including PACTE (Grenoble) and PEPAS (Rio de Janeiro). Her PhD in Anthropology from Universität Hamburg (1995) focused on Brazilian psychiatry, and she previously served as a professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.

- PhD in Anthropology, Universität Hamburg (1995)
- Master's in Anthropology, Universität Hamburg (1990)
- Bachelor's in Anthropology/Sociology, Universität Hamburg (1986)
- Postdoc in Anthropology, McGill University (2001)
Leibing's research examines aging, dementia (Alzheimer's/Parkinson's), mental health, medications, and transcultural healthcare dynamics, with fieldwork in Brazil and Germany. She explores ethical dimensions of dementia prevention, biotechnologies like stem cells, and critical gerontology. Her work emphasizes cultural contexts, caregiving, and health inequalities.
Her publications analyze dementia's sociocultural frameworks, prevention ethics, and aging narratives. Recent trends highlight vascularization of Alzheimer's, fallacies in care practices, and public perceptions of biotechnology. Articles integrate anthropology, bioethics, and health policy, often using ethnographic methods.
Awards:
- Guggenheim Fellowship
- Chris Freeman Award (2018) for contributions to science/technology studies
Leibing has supervised over 20 graduate students (Master's/PhD) since 2010, focusing on aging, dementia care, and global health. She leads major grants including CRSH/FRQS-funded projects like 'Optimizing the Aging Brain' (dementia prevention ethics) and 'Connective Materialities' (aging/body politics in Brazil). She directs interdisciplinary teams exploring biotechnology, care practices, and health disparities.
