Anneli Frelin is a Professor of Didactics at Gävle University, Sweden. She leads the strategic research area Innovative Learning and serves as deputy leader of the Tomorrow's Learning Environments program. She co-leads the Research On Learning Environments (ROLE) group with Jan Grannäs. Her work focuses on curriculum development, school design, and pedagogical innovation. Key projects include studies on lighting in educational spaces, activity-based learning environments, and interdisciplinary collaborations with architects and policymakers.
Current research projects emphasize adaptive lighting systems in schools, spatial design for student well-being, and cross-disciplinary partnerships (e.g., with KTH Royal Institute of Technology). Completed projects include evaluations of school environments funded by the Swedish Energy Agency, ERASMUS+, and municipal development funds. Frelin is also involved in the CoReD initiative, promoting tools for collaborative school redesign.
Her research bridges educational theory and practice, with a focus on how physical environments impact teaching/learning dynamics. Recent publications explore flexible learning spaces, teacher adaptation to new infrastructures, and the role of school design in fostering inclusive education.
