Professor Anneleen Foubert is a faculty member in the Department of Geosciences at the University of Fribourg, affiliated with the Faculty of Science and Medicine. Her research focuses on sedimentology, tectonics, and geochemical processes in extreme environments. Key areas of expertise include continental rift systems (e.g., Danakil Depression), cold seep ecosystems, and carbonate diagenesis. She leads studies on the interplay between biotic activity and geologic processes, particularly in submarine environments.
Recent work explores
- Evaporite dynamics in Afar rift basins
- Gas migration mechanisms in Mediterranean sedimentary systems
- High-pH hydrothermal mineralization at Lost City
- Stratigraphic architecture of Jurassic Opalinus Clay
Her fieldwork spans Ethiopia, Turkey, Spain, and the Mediterranean Sea, combining geological mapping, core analysis, and geochemical modeling. Current projects investigate Afar's magma-rich rifting and Mediterranean cold-water coral mound archives.
