Anne-Sofie Sand serves as Associate Professor in the Bachelor's Program in Nursing at Tromsø Campus within UiT The Arctic University of Norway's Faculty of Health. She actively contributes to academic governance as member of the Faculty Board and the Norwegian Nurses' Association research and education group board, while leading the Research Group for Public Health and Rehabilitation.
Her educational qualifications include:
- Ph.D. from UiT (2017)
- Master in Health Sciences from UiT (2011)
- Nursing Education from Tromsø (1984)
- Pedagogical Basic Competence (2019)
- Development Program for Ph.D. Supervisors (2025)
Dr. Sand's research centers on public health challenges in youth and young adults, particularly obesity dynamics, body image perceptions, and lifestyle interventions. Her Tromsø Study: Fit Futures work reveals complex relationships between measured/perceived body size and health concerns, while her clinical studies develop feasible obesity management protocols for older adults. She pioneers Arctic nursing education through the Samprax project, addressing geographical barriers via digital supervision models that maintain educational quality in remote communities. Her mixed-methods approach integrates quantitative population data with qualitative insights on health motivations.
Recent publications demonstrate evolving expertise from adolescent weight management (2015-2018) toward geriatric lifestyle interventions (2019-2021) and contemporary Arctic nursing education innovation (2021-2025). This trajectory reflects increasing focus on implementation science while maintaining core public health themes, with significant contributions to both clinical practice guidelines and nursing pedagogy in resource-limited settings.
Dr. Sand supervises master's and Ph.D. students in nursing, clinical nutrition, and medicine, particularly supporting thesis work on public health interventions and nursing education. Her project leadership includes the RESTART feasibility study for cardiovascular risk reduction and the multi-institutional Arctic Samprax initiative focused on clinical training capacity building.
As co-leader of the Arctic Samprax project, she develops and tests novel supervision frameworks for nursing students in community health services across northern Norway, emphasizing digital solutions to overcome geographical isolation while maintaining educational rigor and student support.
