Anne Simon is a Professor in the Department of Cell Biology and Molecular Genetics at the University of Maryland. She specializes in virology, focusing on RNA viruses and their molecular mechanisms. Her research explores translational control, viral replication, and RNA structure-function relationships using plant viruses such as Turnip crinkle virus (TCV), Saguaro cactus virus (SCV), and Pea enation mosaic virus (PEMV).
Education: B.A., University of California San Diego; Ph.D., Indiana University (1982); Postdoctoral training at Indiana University and University of California San Diego.
Research interests include studying the interplay between translation and replication in RNA viruses, RNA structural dynamics, and the evolution of translational enhancers. Her lab investigates how viral RNAs regulate their own translation and replication through structural changes, particularly focusing on tRNA-like elements and long-distance RNA interactions.
Recent work highlights the discovery of a novel translation mechanism involving a 3' translational enhancer overlapping an internal tRNA-like structure in TCV. She has also contributed to tools like R2DT for RNA structure visualization and RNAcanvas for exploring nucleic acid structures.
Teaching includes courses on cellular and molecular biology, bioethics, and RNA biology. She is affiliated with the Molecular & Cellular Biology graduate program (MOCB).
