Anne Salonen is a University Researcher at the HUMI - Human Microbiome Research unit within the Faculty of Biology and Environmental Sciences at the University of Helsinki. She holds a Docent title and serves as a supervisor for four doctoral programs: Food Chain and Health, Microbiology and Biotechnology, Biomedicine, and Clinical Research. Her research focuses on human microbiome interactions, particularly in pediatric and maternal health contexts, including gut microbiota modulation, metabolic profiles, and infectious disease mechanisms. Salonen is actively involved in EU-funded projects such as FIBRE-MATCH and corporate collaborations like Alba Health and NutriLeads. She has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles, with recent work emphasizing microbiota’s role in obesity, pre-eclampsia, and inflammatory bowel disease. Key contributions include studies on berry supplementation effects, fecal microbiota genetics, and vaginal microbiota during IVF. Salonen has supervised multiple master’s theses and participates in national/international research networks and media engagements.
Research interests span microbial community dynamics, host-microbe interactions, and translational nutrition science. Her projects address public health challenges like sustainable food systems and disease prevention through microbiome insights. Notable collaborations include work with the Helsinki Institute of Life Science and Pirkanmaan hyvinvointialue. Salonen’s work bridges basic science and clinical applications, aiming to improve health outcomes through microbiome-focused interventions.
