Anne Pyburn serves as Provost Professor of Anthropology at Indiana University and holds the position of Vice President of the World Archaeological Congress. Her academic career focuses on the intersection of archaeology, cultural heritage, and community development across diverse geographical contexts.
Her research interests span multiple specialized areas within anthropology and archaeology. Dr. Pyburn investigates community museums with particular focus on Kyrgyzstan, examines the role of women in early state formations, studies ancient Maya economies, explores archaeological research ethics, and analyzes the relationship between archaeology and sustainable development. Her work demonstrates a commitment to applying anthropological insights to contemporary social and environmental challenges.
As an activist, Pyburn is involved in Maya land rights advocacy, connecting her academic expertise with practical applications for indigenous communities.
