Anne-Mette Lebech

Anne-Mette Lebech is a Clinical Professor at the University of Copenhagen's Department of Clinical Medicine and a chief physician at the Department of Infectious Diseases, Copenhagen University Hospital – Rigshospitalet. She holds a dual appointment, being employed both by the Capital Region of Denmark and the University of Copenhagen. As head of the Unit of Tick-borne diseases at Rigshospitalet, she specializes in infectious diseases with particular focus on tick-borne diseases, HIV, and pyogenic vertebral osteomyelitis.

Dr. Lebech graduated from the University of Copenhagen as a medical doctor (MD) in 1989, earned her PhD in 1994, and completed her Doctor of Medical Sciences (DMSc; dr.med.) in 2002. She is board-certified as a specialist in General Internal Medicine and Infectious diseases.

Her research interests encompass multiple critical areas within infectious diseases. She investigates tick-borne diseases including Lyme borreliosis and neuroborreliosis, with particular emphasis on long-term outcomes. Her HIV research focuses on cardiovascular complications in HIV-positive patients, gender differences in HIV presentation, and cervical dysplasia in women living with HIV. She also studies pyogenic vertebral osteomyelitis and various neuroinfections.

Dr. Lebech's recent research output demonstrates a strong concentration on neuroborreliosis, bacterial and viral meningitis, and the neurological consequences of infections. Her work frequently employs nationwide population-based cohort methodologies leveraging Denmark's comprehensive health registries to examine long-term health trajectories, healthcare utilization patterns, and potential associations between infections and other health conditions.

Her funding portfolio includes support from numerous non-profit organizations including Danmarks Frie Forskningsfond, Lundbeck foundation, Novo Nordisk, and others. She has also maintained professional relationships with pharmaceutical companies, having previously served on advisory boards for GSK and Pfizer, and received research funding from Gilead Science.
