Her research focuses on postcolonial analysis, anti-racism frameworks, and structurational divergence theory within healthcare and organizational contexts.
- Education: PhD in Communication from Ohio University, MA from The University at Albany, BA from Utica College
Her work examines how conflicting structural interpretations in professional settings lead to intractable conflicts, particularly in healthcare organizations. She has developed a measurement tool for structurational divergence and applies this theory to socio-political conflicts and anti-racism practices.
The selected publications reflect trends across two decades, covering healthcare communication, nursing conflict dynamics, postcolonial organizational theory, and interdisciplinary approaches to institutional positioning. These works bridge communication studies with critical race theory, feminist scholarship, and medical sociology.
- Advising: Supervised doctoral research on topics including workplace television for women's affirmation, Black consumer experiences in luxury retail, health behavior messaging, and fibromyalgia patient communication
Nicotera contributes to institutional initiatives through roles like conference planning chair for the DC Health Communication Biennial Conference Series, collaborating with the Kentucky Conference on Health Communication.
