Anne Lichtenwalner is an Associate Professor Emerita of Animal and Veterinary Sciences at the University of Maine, serving as an Extension Veterinarian and Director of the University of Maine Animal Health Laboratory (UMAHL). She holds a DVM (1989) from Oregon State University and a PhD (1995) from the University of Idaho. Her research focuses on infectious diseases and parasitology in livestock, poultry, and wildlife, emphasizing translational studies involving students. Key affiliations include the School of Food and Agriculture, Honors College, School of Biology and Ecology, and the College of Natural Sciences, Forestry and Agriculture. She leads UMAHL, part of the Northeast Wildlife Disease Cooperative, addressing Maine's agricultural and environmental health challenges. Her work spans zoonotic pathogens, wildlife-livestock interfaces, and One Health initiatives.
Research interests include moose lung parasites, shellfish pathogens, lobster immune modulation, and algal mastitis. She collaborates across disciplines to address Maine’s unique agricultural ecosystems. Publications from 2011–2014 highlight avian oncogenesis, dairy hygiene, zoonotic viruses, and marine toxin impacts. She contributes to the One Health and Environment initiative, emphasizing interdisciplinary solutions to health challenges.
Dr. Lichtenwalner’s service includes diagnostic leadership at UMAHL and extension roles supporting Maine’s animal industries. Her work bridges academic research, clinical diagnostics, and community outreach, fostering student engagement in real-world health challenges.
