Anne Cheng serves as Professor of Chinese Intellectual History at the Collège de France, holding a chair established in 2008 that continues the institution's long tradition of Chinese studies dating back to the first European chair in Chinese studies created at Collège de France in 1814.
Her research focuses on the evolution of Chinese intellectual traditions from classical to contemporary periods, with particular emphasis on political philosophy and concepts of governance. Cheng examines how traditional Chinese thought engages with modern political challenges, especially regarding freedom, autocracy, and democracy in Chinese contexts. Her work bridges philological approaches with contemporary social science methodologies, analyzing both textual sources and their modern reinterpretations.
Cheng's scholarly activities include a comprehensive lecture series examining Liang Qichao's observation that 'Chinese citizens today can only endure autocracy, they don't know how to enjoy freedom,' along with seminar series exploring authenticity in Chinese thought and a major symposium comparing historical and contemporary perspectives on democracy versus digital dictatorship.
Her academic contributions continue the Collège de France's mission to expand beyond traditional sinological approaches by integrating human and social sciences perspectives while maintaining rigorous engagement with classical Chinese texts and their ongoing relevance to contemporary China.
