Dr. Anne Carlson is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh, affiliated with the Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences. Her research focuses on ion channels and their roles in fertilization biology, particularly the mechanisms preventing polyspermy in amphibian eggs like the African clawed frog (Xenopus laevis). The Carlson Lab employs electrophysiology and fluorescence imaging to uncover signaling pathways initiating the fast block to polyspermy, including the critical role of TMEM16A channels and PIP2 regulation.
Her work bridges fundamental biological processes with translational applications, investigating TMEM16A’s role in human diseases such as cystic fibrosis, asthma, and cancers. Ongoing studies explore how phospholipids modulate ion channel activity using advanced biophysical techniques. Dr. Carlson’s lab collaborates on projects involving genomic insights into fertilization, structural biology of egg coats, and fluorescent protein tools to study metal interactions in cells.
