Anna Young is a Professor and Deputy Head of Department (People and Culture) in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Bath. Her research focuses on experimental and analytical techniques to understand unsteady flow dynamics in marine and aerospace applications, such as tidal turbines and urban air taxis. She holds a PhD (2012) and MEng (2008) from the University of Cambridge, specializing in fluid dynamics and turbine design.
Her work addresses challenges in low-cost design calculations for unsteady flow systems, leveraging low-order models to improve accuracy without prohibitive computational costs. Key projects include the Morphing-Blades initiative for unsteady load mitigation and tidal turbine benchmarking studies. She collaborates with institutions globally and leads interdisciplinary teams in sustainable energy systems.
Recent research highlights include passive pitch systems for tidal turbines, team-based learning in engineering education, and low-cost marine sensors. She actively supervises doctoral students in experimental modeling of unsteady flows. Anna is affiliated with the Centre for Sustainable Energy Systems, IAAPS, and the Institute of Sustainability and Climate Change.
Her projects are funded by UK Research Councils and involve partnerships with organizations like Ifremer (France). Current interests span tidal inflow assessment, vortex instability modulation, and unsteady gust-turbine interactions.
