Anna Undeman Asarnoj

Anna Undeman Asarnoj is an Associate Professor and team leader at Karolinska Institutet's Department of Women's and Children's Health, Division of Clinical Paediatrics. She serves as a Senior Consultant and Pediatric Allergist at Pediatric Pulmonology and Allergy, Astrid Lindgren Children's Hospital, Karolinska University Hospital, and is Program Director for the Karolinska Pediatrics Residency Program overseeing approximately 40 resident doctors.

Her educational background includes a University Medical Degree from Karolinska Institutet (2001), a PhD in Institute of Environmental Medicine (2012), and Docent (Associate Professor) in Pediatrics from Karolinska Institutet (2022). She has conducted allergy research since 2006 with early focus on molecular allergology and food allergy.

Dr. Undeman Asarnoj's research interests center on food allergy mechanisms, oral immunotherapy, and molecular allergology. She is the principal investigator and study designer of the 'SmaChO study – Small Children Oral Immunotherapy' (data collection to be completed in 2025) and PI for the InFO study (Infant Food Oral Immunotherapy). Her work utilizes the BAMSE study (N=4089), a population-based birth cohort, examining food allergy and molecular allergology. She has published extensively in top allergy and immunology journals with research spanning peanut allergy, molecular diagnostics, childhood asthma, and preventive strategies.

Her recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on food allergy mechanisms and treatments, particularly peanut allergy and oral immunotherapy approaches. The research shows progression from molecular diagnostics to clinical trials and long-term follow-up studies, with increasing emphasis on early intervention strategies and understanding the underlying mechanisms of food allergy development.

Dr. Undeman Asarnoj is highly active in teaching medical students (planned Course Director for Pediatric course, semester 10 of the Medical Degree Program), residents (programme director of 40 residents in pediatrics at Karolinska University Hospital), and colleagues. She has written a book about food allergy and hypersensitivity among children, published in March 2023, which has received significant attention in both social and traditional media. She also serves in various professional roles including Board member of the Swedish Association for Allergology (as treasurer), Member of Education Committee at Swedish Paediatric Society, Editorial board member of 'Barnläkaren', and Member of Scientific Committee for The Pediatric Research Foundation at Astrid Lindgren Children's Hospital.

She leads research team Asarnoj at KBH, Karolinska Institutet, focusing on food allergy and immunotherapy studies. Her clinical research position at Stockholm Regional Council (2020-2023) was upgraded to a Higher Clinical research position (2024-2025-2027), reflecting her significant contributions to the field.
