Anna Sjödal is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Faculty of Arts, Psychology and Theology at Åbo Akademi University, specializing in Minority Studies. Her research centers on Russian-speaking minorities in Finland, particularly their experiences in elderly care services, cultural identity, and integration challenges.
Her research interests include:
- Natural parenting and family formation in contemporary Russia
- Reproductive decision-making and conservative ideologies
- Cultural and linguistic barriers in social care
- Dignity and respectful ageing in care narratives
- Integration of immigrant care workers in Nordic welfare systems
- Gender roles and parenting practices in post-Soviet societies
Her recent publications reflect a strong focus on kinship, care work, and minority wellbeing, often analyzing narratives and lived experiences through qualitative and ethnographic methods. She explores how cultural understandings shape care practices and how language functions as both a barrier and a bridge in social services.
Her scientific contributions include organizing the Wellbeing in Minorities seminar series and participating in significant academic panels on migrant labor precarity. She is the principal researcher in two major projects: Care work at cultural and linguistic crossroads and the WeBeMi: Wellbeing in Minorities Network.
She has taught the course Wellbeing in Minorities and actively contributes to public discourse through media appearances on parenting and migration. Her work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals on Reduced Inequalities and Good Health and Well-being.
