Dr. Sandgren's research spans multiple healthcare domains with a primary focus on palliative care, but also extending to heart failure care, intensive care, psychiatric care, and care during the COVID-19 pandemic. She is recognized as a Classic Grounded Theory Fellow and has organized seminars with Dr. Barney Glaser. Her methodological expertise includes both qualitative and quantitative approaches, with particular strength in grounded theory development.
Her recent publications reveal a strong trend toward practical applications of palliative care research, with significant focus on nursing home environments, serious illness conversations, and implementation science. Key research themes include the development of assessment instruments for care environments, exploration of healthcare professionals' self-efficacy, comparative international studies of palliative care practices, and implementation research of structured conversation guides for serious illness.
As Director of the Center for Collaborative Palliative Care, Dr. Sandgren leads initiatives focused on education, clinical development, research, and public engagement. The center aims to design sustainable, co-created palliative care models that enhance patient and family experiences across various care settings through collaboration between academic, clinical, and municipal partners.
