Anna R L Carter is a Research Fellow at Northumbria University, specializing in Digital Civics and Human-Centered Design. Her work focuses on accessible digital experiences through participatory design methods, particularly in public spaces and community regeneration programs.
Her research spans multiple domains including:
- Digital Civics and civic technology
- Neurodivergent-inclusive spatial design
- AI applications in academic collaboration
- Smell-based interaction systems
- Decolonizing participatory design practices
Anna leads two major initiatives: the EU-funded DCitizens Programme for building early-career research capacities, and the EPSRC-funded Centre for Digital Citizens exploring digital civics in outdoor spaces. Her recent publications (2022-2025) demonstrate a strong focus on equity, neuroqueer spatial justice, and multisensory technologies across physical/virtual environments.
She actively develops pedagogies for blended digital-physical experiences and investigates Covid-era public technology redesign. While no specific awards are listed, her work has significantly shaped the digital civics landscape through both academic and community-led frameworks.
