Anna Nickerson is an Associate Professor and Christopher Tower Student and Tutor in Poetry in the English Language at Christ Church, University of Oxford. She specializes in the intersection of poetry, philosophy, and theology, focusing on how poetry enables unique forms of knowledge. Her research explores thinkers like Gerard Manley Hopkins, T.S. Eliot, and Thomas Hardy, examining their engagement with epistemological questions through poetic form. She is currently completing a monograph on Hopkins’ cognitive theories and co-edited Walter de la Mare: Critical Appraisals (2022).
Her teaching spans 19th- and 20th-century poetry at Christ Church, including supervision for Papers 3 (1830–1910) and 4 (1910–present). She directs Tower Poetry, a Christ Church initiative fostering poetry education through competitions and summer schools for young people.
Her work bridges literary and philosophical analysis, emphasizing how poetry interrogates the limits of human understanding. Awards include an Associate Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy.
