Anna Middleton is a Professor and Director of the Kavli Centre for Ethics, Science, and the Public at the University of Cambridge's Faculty of Education. She concurrently serves as Associate Director for Engagement and Society at Wellcome Connecting Science, leading interdisciplinary teams exploring the societal impacts of genomic discoveries. Her dual roles bridge academic research, clinical practice, and public engagement.
She holds a PhD in Genetics and Psychology from the University of Leeds, an MSc in Genetic Counseling (University of Manchester), and a BSc in Genetics. A registered genetic counselor, she previously chaired the Association of Genetic Nurses and Counsellors and contributed to NHS genomic policy frameworks, including the 100,000 Genomes Project.
Her research focuses on public understanding of genomics, ethical implications of genetic testing, and empowering scientists to engage with diverse communities. Notable initiatives include the Society and Ethics Research group at Wellcome, public dialogues on genomic medicine, and the 'Hopes and Fears Lab' exploring emerging technologies.
Teaching contributions include co-developing genomic counseling curricula for the NHS and leading international congresses like the World Congress of Genetic Counselling. She advises on global health policy, including the Topol Review on genomic workforce readiness.
