Anna-Karin Danielsson is an Associate Professor of Public Health Science and Principal Researcher at the Department of Global Public Health, Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden. She serves as team leader of the Alcohol and Drug Epidemiology team within the Epidemiology of Psychiatric Conditions, Substance use and Social Environment (EPiCSS) research group. Dr. Danielsson earned her PhD in Global Public Health from Karolinska Institutet in 2011 and was awarded her Docent title in 2018.
Dr. Danielsson's research focuses on identifying predictors of adolescent alcohol and drug use, examining long-term consequences of substance use and dependence, and improving dependency treatment through epidemiological and clinical research. She is actively involved in the Global Burden of Disease project, collecting and presenting alcohol and drug consumption data for Sweden, and conducting comparative studies between countries in collaboration with international researchers.
Her recent publications (2024-2025) demonstrate a strong focus on alcohol epidemiology in cardiology settings, digital interventions for alcohol reduction, and the relationship between parental substance use and offspring outcomes. Her work frequently employs mixed methods approaches, combining quantitative epidemiological analyses with qualitative insights from patients and clinicians. A significant portion of her research examines the implementation of alcohol screening and interventions in cardiology care, reflecting her interest in bridging public health research with clinical practice.
- Received research funding from Systembolaget's Alcohol Research Council for alcohol prevention research (2019, 2024)
- Active participant in the Global Burden of Disease project
- Collaborates with researchers across Nordic countries and internationally
As an educator, Dr. Danielsson has served as course leader, supervisor, examiner, and teacher for Bachelor's and Master's students in Public Health Science/Global Health since 2013. She serves on the Doctoral board and Department council at Global public health, Karolinska Institutet, and has supervised multiple PhD students whose research focused on cannabis use and mobile technology for alcohol reduction.
Dr. Danielsson leads the Alcohol and Drug Epidemiology team at Karolinska Institutet, collaborating closely with researchers from the Nordic countries, the Institute of Population Health Metrics in Seattle, and other international institutions on substance use research.
