Anna Bierbrauer is Assistant Professor of Landscape Architecture in the Department of Planning and Landscape Architecture at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her research combines political ecology, environmental history, critical physical geography, and geospatial analysis to examine equity issues in urban vegetation systems. She investigates how power dynamics, cultural values, and climate change challenge contemporary approaches to landscape management.
Education: Master of Landscape Architecture from University of Minnesota; Ph.D. in Geography, Planning, and Design from University of Colorado Denver.
Her dissertation research examined Denver's urban vegetation as cultural artifacts, analyzing historical patterns of spatial distribution, professional rhetoric, and water infrastructure development from 1902-1980. Current research interests include:
- Equity-driven analysis of urban vegetation patterns
- Critical examination of dominant cultural values in landscape definition
- Developing new ecologies for climate-changed environments
She collaborates with community members, landscape professionals, university colleagues, and students through research studios to advance understanding of landscape justice in changing environments.
