Professor Anna Amtmann is a leading molecular plant physiologist at the University of Glasgow, with a career spanning over two decades in plant stress tolerance research. Her academic journey began with an MSc and PhD in Biology/Natural Sciences at the University of Göttingen, followed by postdoctoral work at the University of York. She joined Glasgow in 2001, progressing from Lecturer to Senior Lecturer (2004) and Professor (2014). As Editor-in-Chief of Plant, Cell & Environment since 2018, she shapes global plant science discourse.
Research focuses on plant molecular mechanisms for nutrient deficiency, salinity, and drought tolerance. Key areas include ion/water homeostasis, transcriptional regulation, epigenetics, and cross-talk between abiotic/biotic stress. Collaborative work with bioinformaticians and engineers has produced omics analysis pipelines and microfluidics applications in synthetic biology. Industrial partnerships explore cyanobacteria for polymers, photo-switches, and bioremediation.
Recent publications highlight epigenetic memory in stress priming, ion channel engineering for stomatal efficiency, and cyanobacterial biodesalination. Her 15 most recent articles (2025-2017) span disciplines like plant synthetic biology, abiotic stress genomics, and root system plasticity. Techniques include patch clamping, ChIP sequencing, and microarray analysis.
Grants from BBSRC, EPSRC, and the European Commission fund projects on sustainable plastics, stress memory, and soybean resilience. She mentors PhD students Xinmeng Liu and Joseph McLeod, and leads the Plant Stress Research Group, integrating Arabidopsis, Thellungiella, and crops to address food security challenges.
