Dr Ann van Allen-Russell is a Senior Lecturer and Doctoral Supervisor at the Royal College of Music, where she serves as the BMus Programme Coordinator. Her academic career spans multiple prestigious UK institutions with expertise in historical musicology and copyright frameworks.
Her educational background includes:
- PhD in musicology from Goldsmith, University of London (2006; supervisor Simon McVeigh)
- MMus in historical musicology from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (1992; supervisor Pamala Starr)
- BA in music history and flute performance from the Pennsylvania State University (1989)
Ann's research focuses on eighteenth-century music culture, particularly Johann Christian Bach, English music publishing, and intellectual property development. Her work bridges historical musicology with contemporary copyright issues, examining how legal frameworks have shaped musical creativity throughout history. She is currently developing research on cultural economics related to the Bach-Abel concerts for her forthcoming book The Bach and Abel Suits: Intellectual property and the Value of Creativity.
Her scholarly contributions include a forthcoming book chapter in Music Borrowing and Copyright Law: A Genre-by-Genre Analysis (Bloomsbury, 2023), with research supported by grants from the Music & Letters Trust and Trinity Laban. She has presented at international conferences across the UK, US, and Europe.

Ann previously served as Senior Lecturer, BMus Programme Coordinator, and TL: Augment programme leader at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, with additional teaching experience at Goldsmiths, University of London and Oxford Brookes University.
