Dr. Ann-Kathrin Amsel is a Research Associate at the Institute of Sustainable Chemistry (INSC) and holds the position of Study Programme Coordinator for the M.Sc. Sustainable Chemistry at Leuphana Professional School. She is affiliated with the Professorship for Sustainable Chemistry and Material Resources. Her doctoral research focuses on applying Benign by Design principles to assess biodegradability of ionic liquids in the environment. She completed her Master's (2018) and Bachelor's (2016) degrees in Sustainability Science and Environmental Sciences at Leuphana University.
Research Interests: Sustainable chemistry, biodegradability of synthetic chemicals, ionic liquids, computational modeling for environmental safety, and implementation of Benign by Design frameworks. Her work bridges environmental toxicology and green chemistry, emphasizing practical applications for sustainable material development.
Recent Activities: Presented at multiple conferences (e.g., Modelling biodegradability of ionic liquids in 2024), delivered guest lectures on environmentally mineralising chemicals (2023), and contributed to workshops on in silico tools for sustainable design (2021–2022).
Teaching: Led the M.Sc. Sustainable Chemistry programme (2021–2023), focusing on integrating research and professional education in sustainable resource management.
Lab/Team Affiliation: Core member of the Sustainable Chemistry group at INSC, collaborating with Prof. Klaus Kümmerer and colleagues on interdisciplinary projects.
