Dr. Michels studied Political Science at Nijmegen University and completed her dissertation at the Department of Public Administration of the University of Twente. Her academic journey demonstrates a consistent focus on democratic processes and governance structures, building from her foundational education to her current research expertise.
Dr. Michels' research focuses on democratic innovations, participatory governance, and deliberative democracy. She investigates how citizens can be effectively involved in decision-making processes and how different forms of democratic innovations impact local governance. Her work explores the intersection of traditional representative democracy with newer participatory mechanisms, examining questions of legitimacy, effectiveness, and inclusivity in democratic processes. She has published extensively on these topics in both English and Dutch academic journals, with research spanning citizen participation in smart cities, democratic innovations like the G1000, and the impact of deliberative initiatives on local governance. Her work often addresses practical challenges in implementing democratic innovations while maintaining democratic principles.
Her current research project, the NWA-project 'Revitalized Democracy for Resilient Societies,' examines the effects of combinations of deliberative and plebiscitary forms of democratic innovations (talking and voting). This builds on her long-standing interest in hybrid democratic models that combine different forms of citizen engagement. Analysis of her publication trends shows an evolving focus from theoretical examinations of democratic innovation to more applied research on implementation challenges and effectiveness metrics, with increasing attention to digital participation methods and sustainability governance.
Dr. Michels regularly advises governments and government organizations about political reforms and local democratic innovations. She serves as a bridge between academic research and practical governance applications, helping translate theoretical insights into concrete policy recommendations. Her advisory work demonstrates the real-world impact of her research.
At the Utrecht University School of Governance, Dr. Michels teaches public administration and politics, supervises bachelor's and master's theses, and teaches in Executive Master Programs. Her teaching reflects her research interests, focusing on how governance systems can be made more participatory and responsive to citizens' needs. She is involved in the 'Governance and Policy' training program, contributing to the education of future public administration professionals.
Dr. Michels is affiliated with the research themes 'Institutions for Open Societies (IOS)' and 'Pathways to Sustainability (PtS)' at Utrecht University. She has also contributed to interdisciplinary research on sustainable energy policy, particularly examining Dutch policy for phasing out coal-fired power plants and its contribution to both policy objectives and energy innovation. Her work often involves collaboration with researchers across disciplines to address complex governance challenges.
