Ank Michels

Dr. Ank Michels is an Associate Professor in Public Governance and Management at the Utrecht University School of Governance, Faculty of Law, Economics and Governance. Dr. Michels studied Political Science at Nijmegen University and completed her dissertation at the Department of Public Administration of the University of Twente. Dr. Michels' research focuses on democratic innovations, participatory governance, and deliberative democracy. She investigates how citizens can be effectively involved in decision-making processes and how different forms of democratic innovations impact local governance. Her work explores the intersection of traditional representative democracy with newer participatory mechanisms, examining questions of legitimacy, effectiveness, and inclusivity in democratic processes. She has published extensively on these topics in both English and Dutch academic journals, with research spanning citizen participation in smart cities, democratic innovations like the G1000, and the impact of deliberative initiatives on local governance. Her work often addresses practical challenges in implementing democratic innovations while maintaining democratic principles.

Her current research project, the NWA-project 'Revitalized Democracy for Resilient Societies,' examines the effects of combinations of deliberative and plebiscitary forms of democratic innovations (talking and voting). This builds on her long-standing interest in hybrid democratic models that combine different forms of citizen engagement. Analysis of her publication trends shows an evolving focus from theoretical examinations of democratic innovation to more applied research on implementation challenges and effectiveness metrics, with increasing attention to digital participation methods and sustainability governance.
