Anjum Hajat is an Associate Professor in the Department of Epidemiology at the University of Washington School of Public Health. Her research investigates how social and environmental stressors—including poverty, air pollution, and economic policies—impact cardiovascular health, with particular focus on disadvantaged populations and health inequities.
Dr. Hajat's work sits at the critical intersection of social and biological factors, examining how societal conditions "get under the skin" to affect physiological health outcomes. Her current projects include analyzing Seattle's minimum wage legislation impacts on low-wage workers' health through community partnerships, while her foundational research explores environmental justice and stressor mechanisms in cardiovascular disease development. She emphasizes that meaningful health equity requires addressing upstream social determinants through policy interventions.
Outside academia, Dr. Hajat balances her career with raising 5-year-old twins and exploring the Pacific Northwest. An avid runner, she participates in half-marathons and relays through a local running group, demonstrating her commitment to both physical activity and community engagement as health determinants.
