Dr Anishka Gheewala is a social anthropologist affiliated with the Department of Anthropology at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). Her expertise encompasses Hindu movements, kinship, childhood, and digital Hindu life, with a focus on diasporic communities and religious practices. She conducted fieldwork in Gujarat, India, and Leicester, UK, exploring themes of prayer, play, and the human-divine relationship. Her research also addresses the intersection of religion and environment, care-giving in childhood, and the impact of digital platforms on religious practices.
- Education: MSc in Religion in the Contemporary World (LSE Anthropology), BA in French, Spanish, and European Studies (University of Bath).
- Teaching: Graduate Teaching Assistant, LSE Summer School instructor on Childhood, and holder of a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education.
Her current projects include a monograph derived from her doctoral thesis on Pushtimarg prayer practices and a co-authored book (under peer review) analyzing online Hindu bhakti life through digital ethnography. She contributed to the LSE's Covid and Care Research Group, studying pandemic impacts on new parents and Hindu communities.
Dr Gheewala's work bridges traditional and digital ethnography, examining how religious practices adapt across diasporas and virtual spaces. She collaborates with interdisciplinary teams and explores the evolving dynamics of faith, kinship, and care in contemporary societies.
