Anil Shaji is an Associate Professor and Associate Dean (P & D) at the School of Physics, Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Thiruvananthapuram (IISER TVM). He joined IISER TVM as an Assistant Professor in June 2009 and was promoted to Associate Professor in September 2014. His academic journey began with a B.Sc. in Physics from University College Thiruvananthapuram, followed by an M.Sc. in Physics from IIT-Madras, and a Ph.D. from the University of Texas, Austin under the supervision of Prof. E. C. G. Sudarshan.
Dr. Shaji's research primarily focuses on quantum information theory and its applications to understanding fundamental physical phenomena. His work explores the perspective provided by information theory in studying physical phenomena, believing that information plays a role as important as energy and momentum in understanding the natural world. His research spans quantum metrology, open quantum dynamics, non-classical correlations, quantum Zeno effect, and quantum entanglement in continuous variable systems. He has made significant contributions to understanding the fundamental and practical limits on measurement precision in quantum metrology.
His publications reveal a consistent focus on quantum information theory with strong connections to quantum measurement, open quantum systems, and quantum metrology. The research trajectory shows an evolution from foundational quantum mechanics topics like the spin-statistics connection toward increasingly applied areas in quantum metrology and quantum sensing. His collaborative work with researchers at institutions like the University of New Mexico, Caltech, and other leading quantum research centers demonstrates the interdisciplinary nature of his work.
Dr. Shaji has received several prestigious awards and recognitions including the Prof. Chilikuri Rama Sastri memorial gold medal from IIT-Chennai, a gold medal for being the best graduating B.Sc. physics student at University College Trivandrum, and the CSIR golden jubilee merit fellowship. He is a member of the American Physical Society and serves as a referee for leading physics journals.
As an educator, Dr. Shaji has taught various courses including Quantum Mechanics, Electromagnetism, Classical Mechanics, and specialized courses on Quantum Information Theory. He has mentored numerous students and contributed significantly to curriculum development in quantum information science at IISER TVM.
