Dr. Anil Lal is Professor of Economics in the College of Business at Pittsburg State University (PSU), Kansas. A former Indian Civil Service economist and World-Bank consultant, he earned a B.A.(Hons) from St. Stephen’s College Delhi, an M.A. from Delhi School of Economics, an M.Phil in Development Economics from the University of Glasgow, and a Ph.D. in Economics from Washington State University.

Research & Scholarship:
Dr. Lal’s work sits at the intersection of international economics, development economics and applied econometrics. He investigates how foreign direct investment, trade openness and institutional quality shape GDP growth, with regional foci on China, India, MENA and sub-Saharan Africa. Additional interests include exchange-rate dynamics (J-curve), entrepreneurship-led development, and pedagogical innovation in economics instruction.
Across two decades he has produced 18+ refereed articles in journals such as Journal of Development Economics, Journal of International Trade & Economic Development, Journal of Asian Economics and Singapore Economic Review, together with invited book chapters on globalization and commercial policy.
Teaching & Engagement:
At PSU he regularly teaches Principles of Microeconomics, Intermediate Microeconomics, International Economics, Econometrics and the capstone Seminar in Applied Economics. An early adopter of blended learning, he has created 120+ YouTube lecture videos and experiments with flipped and fully online formats to enhance student engagement and learning outcomes.
Service & Recognition:
He serves as ad-hoc reviewer for numerous international journals and frequently presents his research at national and global conferences. His advisees have garnered awards at PSU’s annual Research Colloquium, attesting to his commitment to mentoring student research.
