Angus McLean Balbernie is an Associate Lecturer and current Acting Head of Choreography at the Northern School of Contemporary Dance (NSCD) in the UK. He also teaches at LEM Buenos Aires and Falmouth University. His academic career includes roles at EDDC/artEZ Arnhem, Dartington College of Arts, and The Scottish School of Contemporary Dance, where he focused on choreography, composition through the body, and directing. McLean Balbernie’s research explores somatic and perceptual systems in choreography, emphasizing connections between movement and natural landscapes. Recent projects include collaborations like 'Unter Uns' and commissions for Verve in the UK. His work spans over 30 years, with performances and creations across Europe, the Americas, and Asia.
Research themes center on how bodily perception and environmental influences shape choreographic forms. Current projects include leading NSCD's Choreography and Creative Studies programs and developing new works that integrate ecological and somatic principles. McLean Balbernie’s teaching philosophy emphasizes embodied knowledge and experimental composition techniques.
