Dr. Angela Ya Gao serves as an Assistant Professor in Accounting at the University of Sussex Business School, where she also holds leadership roles as Faculty Admissions and Recruitment Lead and Course Director for the BSc Finance and Business program. With 17 years of teaching experience across leading universities in the UK and China, she brings extensive expertise in accounting education and research.
Her educational background includes a PhD in Management (Corporate Governance) from the University of Surrey and an MSc in Investment Management from the ICMA Centre at the University of Reading. She is a Certified Practising Accountant (CPA Australia) and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA).
Dr. Gao's research focuses on the intersection of sustainability, artificial intelligence, and accounting education. She has been actively strengthening her expertise through multiple initiatives, including creating the Sustainable Business Finance postgraduate module, completing the Sustainable Finance course at the University of Cambridge, and founding the Sustainability and AI Business Action Centre (https://sabac.uk/). Her work explores how AI is transforming accounting education and practice, with particular emphasis on corporate governance and sustainability reporting.

- Students-led Video Contents Creation on Sustainable Finance won the Education and Students Small Grant Awards 2022

- Contributor to the Student Connector Project which won the Sussex Education Awards in June 2021
Dr. Gao serves as a peer reviewer for the Journal of Business Ethics, Journal of Applied Accounting Research, and Innovations in Education and Teaching International. She is also an active member of the British Accounting and Finance Association (BAFA) Accounting Education Group and the British Academy of Management. Her blog posts on Zhihu (China's equivalent of Quora) have garnered over 4.3 million views, 25,000+ Likes, and 17,000+ Archives as of July 2025.
She is fluent in English and Mandarin Chinese (native), with working knowledge of French.
