Angela M. Zivkovic is an Associate Professor in the Department of Nutrition at the University of California, Davis, and an Associate Nutritionist at the Agricultural Experiment Station. She leads the Zivkovic Lab, which focuses on precision nutrition to prevent chronic diseases, particularly Alzheimer’s disease, through modulation of HDL functionality, inflammation, and gut microbiota.
Dr. Zivkovic earned her B.S. in Conservation & Resource Studies from UC Berkeley and her Ph.D. in Nutritional Biology from UC Davis.
Her research centers on precision nutrition, with emphasis on the functional biology of HDL, dietary effects on inflammation, integration of multi-omics data, and the impact of diet on gut microbiota. Her lab investigates how fasting, eggs, Mediterranean diet, prebiotics, and vitamin D affect HDL function and neurodegeneration. She employs metabolomic, lipidomic, proteomic, glycomic, and genomic approaches to understand individual metabolic responses.
Recent publications highlight trends in Alzheimer’s disease research, HDL glycoproteomics, gut microbiome modulation, fasting effects, and extracellular vesicle analysis. Her work bridges nutritional science with molecular mechanisms of disease.
- Principal Investigator, NIH R01 grant on glycosylation and Alzheimer’s disease
- Principal Investigator, NIH Common Fund Extracellular RNA Communication Consortium sub-award
- Principal Investigator, NIGMS technology development grant for HDL isolation
- Scientific advisor, Realm Foods
- Runs a precision nutrition consultation practice
Dr. Zivkovic mentors several graduate students and postdoctoral scholars, including Joanne Agus, Jack Zheng, Cynthia Tang, Brian Hong, Eduardo Romo, and Susan Lei. Her lab is actively involved in method development for HDL characterization and multi-omics data integration.
The Zivkovic Lab is funded by multiple NIH grants and USDA funding for Goji berry research. It develops advanced methods for HDL isolation using size-exclusion chromatography and optical detectors, and explores fasting mimetics for healthspan extension.
