Angela Gill is an Associate Professor in the School of Education at Durham University. She holds an additional title of Assistant Professor (Teaching) and is actively involved in the Primary English team. Her academic roles include teaching on the BA and PGCE Primary Education courses, module convenor for BA English for Primary Teaching 2, and academic advising for both BA and PGCE students. Angela has extensive experience in primary education spanning over 20 years, with a BEd and current MA studies.
Her research focuses on Initial Teacher Training (ITT), Primary English curriculum development, phonics instruction, early reading strategies, and academic writing support for students. She has collaborated with the Foundation Centre and English Language Centre to develop online academic writing tools for PGCE students using the FOCUS corpus.
Angela has authored/co-authored multiple influential publications in literacy education, including books on systematic synthetic phonics, deeper writing techniques, and primary teacher training. Her work emphasizes bridging word recognition skills with comprehension and fostering a love for reading among young learners.
Her contributions extend to pedagogical innovations in teacher education, particularly through integrating digital tools for academic support and refining assessment feedback methods for trainee teachers.
