Prof. Dr. Angela Casini holds the Chair of Medicinal and Bioinorganic Chemistry at the Technische Universität München (TUM) since 2019. She is a core member of the Munich Institute of Data Science (MDSI) and associated researcher at the Catalysis Research Center (CRC). Her academic journey includes a PhD from the University of Florence (2004), postdoctoral research at EPFL (2004-2011), Assistant Professorship at the University of Groningen (2011-2015), and a Chair at Cardiff University (2015-2019).
Her research spans three main areas:
- Metal-Based Therapeutics – Designing organometallic complexes (Au, Ru, Pd) for bioorthogonal catalysis in cells and targeted cancer/infectious disease treatment
- Metallacages – Developing self-assembled supramolecular complexes for drug delivery and theranostic applications, integrating machine learning for medical metadynamics
- Metal Biology – Investigating Cu/Zn/Fe ions in disease mechanisms and engineering metal compounds for aquaporin modulation in inflammation and neurodegeneration
Analysis of her 15 most recent publications reveals trends in organogold anticancer agents, radiolabeled metallacages for imaging, and machine learning-aided drug design. Key collaborations involve TUM's CRC and MDSI, with ongoing projects like SMARTdrugs (radiotheranostics) and UbiQancer (ubiquitin system targeting).
Major recognitions include
- ACS Inorganic Lectureship Award (2019)
- European Medal for Biological Inorganic Chemistry (2012)
- Hans Fischer Fellowship (2016)
- Rosalind Franklin Fellowship (2011)
Prof. Casini currently manages the Chair of Pharmaceutical Radiochemistry ad interim and supervises interdisciplinary projects combining metal chemistry with data science and medical applications.
