Ángel Pérez Ruzafa is a Full Professor of Ecology at the University of Murcia, affiliated with the Faculty of Biology and the Department of Ecology and Hydrology. His research focuses on coastal lagoon ecosystems, marine biodiversity, and environmental management. He earned his PhD in 1989 with a thesis on the Mar Menor lagoon's benthic ecosystems. He has held roles including Head of the Research Group 'Ecology and Management of Coastal Marine Ecosystems' and served as President of the Academy of Sciences of the Region of Murcia.
Education: BSc in Biology (Universities of Murcia and La Laguna, 1980), PhD in Ecology (University of Murcia, 1989), and a degree in Fine Arts (University of Murcia). Research interests include coastal lagoon dynamics, marine protected areas, and ecological planning. Over 100 publications in peer-reviewed journals highlight his work on ecosystem management, biodiversity, and climate change impacts.
Key contributions include studies on the Mar Menor lagoon's ecology, jellyfish population dynamics, and the socioeconomic importance of coastal lagoons. Awards include the Mérito Civil award (2024). Collaborates with international projects on lagoon ecosystems and marine conservation.
