Andy Uhrich is an Assistant Professor of Moving-Image Archiving at the University of Colorado. He holds a PhD from Indiana University and a master’s degree from New York University’s Moving Image Archiving and Preservation program.
His research focuses on the politics of media preservation through community-based and non-institutional archival practices. Key areas include:
- Preservation of nontheatrical and amateur films
- Mass digitization of 16mm collections
- Restoration of works by marginalized filmmakers (Sidney Peterson, Marjorie Keller, etc.)
- Decolonizing archival methodologies
- Personal/family media collection care
His professional experience spans roles at the WashU Film & Media Archive and IU Libraries Moving Image Archive, where he led film identification workshops and designed digitization programs. He previously served on the Center for Home Movies board and chaired the Continuing Education Advisory Taskforce for the Association of Moving Image Archivists.
Current projects include revising his dissertation on private collectors’ influence into a book manuscript. His publications address:
- Preservation challenges for early computer art
- Historical roles of illustrated lecturers in film education
- Racial stereotype replication through illicit film copying practices
